FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes. Exterior concrete can easily be polished using the exact same/ similar techniques to interior concrete grinding; however there are some variables that should be considered before beginning the process. Exterior concrete is both subject to higher UV radiation exposure, and water damage, which can be detrimental to any epoxy or polyurethane application. Additionally, concrete grinding will smooth the area and make the exterior surface slippery when wet.

Concrete Grindpro. is a Auckland based business, with independent owner operators in Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Taranaki. We are willing to travel across New Zealand for larger projects as well.

Concrete grinders are excellent at removing hardened glue, and can quickly refresh a concrete floor back to its original state, making it ready for new paint application, tile/ wood overlays or even concrete floor polishing.

Paint and glue substances are often difficult and time consuming to remove by hand or with chemical paint/adhesive removers; the best way to restore the floor to its original concrete state is often to use a concrete grinder with purpose built paint/adhesive removal grinding pads. This method of grinding offers and even, controlled approach that is far superior to shot blasting or high water pressure cleaning.

Homeowners should consider the long term benefits of Polished Concrete when considering the total cost of their floor finishes. For example tiled or carpeted floors need to be maintained and/or replaced periodically where a Polished Concrete floor is a long term solution.

In a new build polished concrete floors are completed at the plaster stage before any skirts, cabinetry and joinery is installed.

Once the building tasks are close to done a polished concreter may also return for a final buff. One should also note that the cost of polished concrete is also cheaper in the long term as is durability.

There are many variables that determine how expensive polished concrete might be, including the size of the area to be polished, amount of depth to be ground off, hardness of the concrete and desired finished (rough or fine); with those factors in mind, polished concrete is between $45- $90 per square metre, with rough finishes being cheaper and the per metre cost being lower for larger areas.

For new houses the type of aggregate and concrete colour should be decided before the slab is poured.

The concreter should liaise with the concrete polisher before pouring the slab to ensure the density of the concrete is optimal and so that the slab is poured with an even spread of aggregate.

With existing houses an examination of the concrete slab should be made and a grinding and polishing procedure should be decided upon in consultation with the concrete polisher.

This will ensure the best finish can be brought out of the existing concrete and aggregate. Carpet and tiles are then removed, flaws in the slab treated and polishing commences.

Polished Concrete floors have become very popular because they are a durable, scratch resistant, low maintenance and easy to clean.

This results in a low allergenic, asthmatic friendly floor that is also visually exquisite. A machine polished floor does not need resealing to maintain its lustre so no major furniture upheaval is required every other year.
